[MAP] paper on eigen-emittances

Yuri,

Thanks, but what in your paper addresses any “heated discussion” about “cooling”?

It’s not really controversial the Hamiltonian dynamics of charged particles in electromagnetic fields involves canonical momenta rather than simply mechanical momentum.

What is possibly controversial is whether one needs to compute the eigenemittances separately (based on canonical momenta, of course), compared to summarizing the results in terms of more familiar 4d and 6d emittances that are square roots of the products of eigenemittances.

If your paper sheds light on this issue, please point to where this is done.

Didn’t you consider only an example in which epsilon1 ~ epsilon2, so there is little/no loss of information in considering only sqrt(epsilon1 epsilon2). Or, do you argue that the slight difference between epsilon1 and epsilon2 in fig. 7 teaches us something that we would be missing by only considering sqrt(epsilon1 epsilon2)? If so, what?

Hi,
I submitted the promised paper on eigen-emittances as MAP-doc-4358
Among others it considers topics which aroused heated discussions in the recent past.
Yuri
