From barzi at fnal.gov Mon Aug 2 00:33:46 2010 From: barzi at fnal.gov (Emanuela Barzi) Date: Sun, 01 Aug 2010 23:33:46 -0500 Subject: [MAP] 14 T cable test facility Message-ID: I am pleased to announce that, in the frame of our on-going research on high field superconductors, a 14 T Rutherford cable test facility is under commissioning in the SC R&D lab of the Magnet System Department, Technical Division at Fermilab. This facility makes use of a superconducting transformer to test a bi-filar cable sample. Attached are the results of commissioning runs on two samples: a NbTi cable, and a Nb3Sn cable that had been used in the fabrication of one of our mirror magnets. More details will be given in a presentation at the 5LX oral session at ASC on Friday afternoon. I thank my team, particularly Dan Turrioni for his expertise with the DAQ and Allen Rusy for his mechanical skills. An Indico site for this purpose is in the process of being set up. There will be dry runs for the four breakout sessions [Design & Simulations, System Tests, RF, and Magnets] held at Fermilab from August 17-19, 2010. The Indico site for the dry runs is found at http://indico.fnal.gov/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=3516. *If you see your name on the dry run agenda, you are expected to be at Fermilab (One North) to give your talk at the indicated time*, and to at least sit through all of the talks in your particular breakout session. All of the dry runs are "open" so any MAP member is free to attend. (We anticipate having the slides posted and a phone link set up, so MAP members who are not making presentations can still listen to and comment on the talks.) The goal is to go through each breakout session dry run in the order of the actual agenda, as a way of uncovering "ordering" problems in the talks. Please try to have essentially final slides prepared for the dry run, using the template sent to you earlier by Steve Geer. Please note that a talk designated as "20+10" in the final agenda should have only 20 minutes of material prepared, not 30 minutes. This must (and will!) be strictly enforced at the review, so please plan accordingly. There are some talks on the final agenda that are not scheduled for dry runs during this period. Arrangements will be made to dry run these remaining talks as well on an individual basis. If you need guidance on the content of your talk, please look at the notes in the V11b agenda and/or consult with your Level 1 manager. These are both scalable and should look good either projected or printed. If all else fails there are bitmapped PNG files; the filename ends with rrrb, where rrr is the resolution and b is either w (for a white background) or t (for a transparent background). The transparent background should allow the logo to blend into whatever background you have, but not all programs will handle it well. If you need something different (different format/resolution/background) let me know and I'll try to accommodate. -Scott From mszisman at lbl.gov Mon Aug 9 16:16:19 2010 From: mszisman at lbl.gov (Michael S. The list of technical consultants is: Accelerator Systems (1) Tom Markiewicz (SLAC) (2) Steve Peggs (BNL) rf systems (1) Erk Jensen (CERN) (2) Chris Adolphsen (SLAC) beam physics and simulation (1) Yunhai Cai (SLAC) (2) John Cary (CU) magnet systems (1) Peter McIntyre (TAMU) (2) Al Zeller (FRIB-MSU) management (1) John Womersley (STFC, UK) As you see, Markiewicz and Peggs will look at the accelerator systems as a whole including target, etc.. From DOE, we are expecting Mike Procario, LK Len, Bruce Strauss and possibly Dennis Kovar. There will be a Fermilab site visit going on at the same time, so there likely will be more DOE folks around, but most will be involved in both meetings and thus "timesharing". Steve Geer is away until just before the review, so please address any questions to the Level 1 managers and/or me. The closeout slides can be found on the review website: http://indico.fnal.gov/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=3474 . We expect a written report in a couple of months. Another website that has just gone live is the MAP website. Please take a look at http://map.fnal.gov/ . We will be developing this further in the coming months. Hopefully it will provide a nice "public face" as well as a useful tool for us.
