EB Phone meeting, July 6, 2005 AGENDA ===> 1) Report: The Scoping International Study (S. Geer) Organization of the Scoping Study, Steve is one member of the organization Comm. Chair P. Dornan Physics: Y. Nagashima Machine: M. Zisman Detector: A. Blondel Here is a link to the Summary Talk by P. Dornan at NUFACT05 http://www.cap.bnl.gov/mumu/scopingstudy/ Will report at NUFACT06. This will be followed by a Multi-year Study ===> 2) Discussion of the 2005 MUTAC report (go to http://www.cap.bnl.gov/mumu/MUTAC/) (S. Geer, B. Palmer) Strong report on balance criticism from Yokoya: Study of Neutrino Factory without cooling ( Bob will send his recent work on this) concerns:1) MICE spectrometer solenoid, try to find a different source of funding and not the collaboration. 2) Cern Targetry experiment: two issues safety and they will like to see the two weeks of runs to be split in two with a gap between them for assessment of experimental situation. It was decided that the Technical Board will review the CERN targetry experiment as well as MICE (US part) GOOD news: NSF awarded $750K; MRI for MICE tracker. 3) more people are needed for ICOOL development ===> 3) Suggestion to change the Collaboration's official name (as set in the Charter); could it be "Neutrino and Muon Collaboration (NMC)"? DoE has suggested to change the name of the Collaboration, with emphasis to include the word Neutrino in the short version of the Collaboration's name. It was suggested that one way will be to change the logo to reflect that; the issue will be discussed further MC ===> NMC NFMCC are examples. I circulated some possible new logos; further discussion is needed; of course MCOG has to approve and the charter changed accordingly. Example of logos ===> 4) Issue of the extension of Spokespersons term in office. (M. Zisman) In view of the HEPAP sub-panel review he argued that it is better to postpone the election process to Feb or March 2006. all present agreed with the extension; I sent an email to those that could not make the meeting for their consent. ===> 5) D. Sutter retired from DoE effective July 1. National search for replacement. Motivations? The charge letter for the HEPAP sub-panel is linked from the Collaboration WEB page ( under the heading News, Funding and Support). Situation right now: discussions with potential Chair. DoE wants preliminary report by Oct. and Final one on Dec. ===> 6) BNL specific issue ( the group existence has been threaten, one person was laid off) BNL is writing a proposal to DoE for Neutrino Physics and the Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Group has been asked to participate. M. Zisman and S. Geer argued that the Collaboration should present the proposal rather the BNL group. We are a National Program and we want to continue like this. Mike got news from DoE confirming the budget for the Collaboration of $3.6M MCOG will discuss the issue, perhaps this Monday.
